From Canada with love: kids honour the flag ahead of India’s 79th Independence Day

Children of Indian origin from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) came together this week to mark India’s 79th Independence Day in a way that was both vibrant and heartwarming.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto, in collaboration with Dhishum Radio, hosted a special painting competition for children, turning canvases into a celebration of freedom, unity, and national pride.

The event, part of the Har Ghar Tiranga 2025 campaign, brought young artists together to express what the Indian tricolour flag means to them. From hand-painted flags fluttering in imagined skies to colourful scenes of India’s landscapes and heritage, each artwork told a story of identity, patriotism, and hope.

What is Har Ghar Tiranga?

The Har Ghar Tiranga movement is a global initiative launched by the Government of India in 2022 as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, commemorating 75 years of independence. The campaign encourages citizens across India and abroad to:

  • Display the national flag at their homes, offices, and community spaces
  • Learn and share the flag’s history and symbolism
  • Participate in cultural events and activities that celebrate India’s freedom struggle and national unity

Every year, from August 13 to 15, millions of flags wave proudly across the country and beyond its borders, turning entire neighbourhoods into living symbols of patriotism.

Celebrating culture, strengthening bonds

Through events like the Toronto children’s painting competition, the Har Ghar Tiranga movement has found a new dimension within the Indian diaspora, giving younger generations a chance to connect with their roots while celebrating creativity.

Parents, community members, and organisers praised the initiative, calling it a beautiful way to unite families, strengthen cultural bonds, and keep the spirit of independence alive, no matter how far from India one may be.
